From the house at Gneisenaustraße 93, you take the light rail and change once, at the main station:
- Walk 350 m, about 5 minutes, to the Schützenstraße stop.
- Take the U47 or U49 two stops to the main station.
- Change there to the U45; coming from the U47, it leaves from the same underground platform.
- On match days, the U45 runs to the Stadion stop, which is only served during events; from there it is about 450 m. On other days, get off at the Westfalenhallen stop and walk 800 to 950 m.
- Alternatively, regional trains run from the main station to Signal Iduna Park station.
BVB home game with an overnight stay: tips for match day
Bundesliga, DFB Cup or European competition: you’ll find the home fixtures on the BVB website. According to DSW21, on match days the U45 runs at least every five minutes between the main station and the stadium from about three hours before kick-off until 90 minutes after the final whistle. After that, trains run less often.
On match day, your BVB ticket counts as a combined ticket for one outward and one return journey by bus, light rail and local trains without surcharge (2nd class) throughout North Rhine-Westphalia. According to BVB, digital print@home tickets need a separate travel ticket. The rules can change, so check them before the match on BVB’s travel page and with DSW21.
On match days, DSW21 directs football fans at the main station to the platform via the north entrance. After the final whistle, take the U45 back to the main station and from there the U47 or U49 two stops to Schützenstraße. From the main station, you can also walk back to the house in about 16 minutes.
Parking at Signal Iduna Park or at your accommodation
According to BVB, there are over 10,000 paid parking spaces around the stadium. You have to buy parking tickets online in advance, and BVB asks you not to enter the stadium address into your navigation system. DSW21 recommends that drivers park at a park-and-ride site on match days and continue by train; one of them is P+R Hafen.
As our guest, you park on Gneisenaustraße, currently free of charge (please check the signs), and take the light rail from Schützenstraße to the match. The fallback is P+R Hafen, 400 m from the house. Getting here: A45, exit Dortmund-Hafen, then about 4 km along Mallinckrodtstraße.
For away fans: an away game in Dortmund with an overnight stay
According to BVB, car park E3 is the main one for away fans. The club recommends coming by bus and train, fan bus, on foot or by bike.
If you are coming to Dortmund with your group for an away game, JayBnB has apartments for 2 to 6 guests. The larger ones have two bedrooms, so you stay together and have the kitchenette and dining table to yourselves the next morning.
Stadium tour and BORUSSEUM on non-match days
The stadium opened on April 2, 1974, as the Westfalenstadion. According to BVB, its 81,365 places make it Germany’s largest football stadium; the South Stand was expanded to 24,454 places in 1999 and, according to the club, is Europe’s largest standing terrace.
On the self-guided stadium walk or a guided stadium tour, you see the stadium from the inside. The meeting point for the stadium walk is the FanWelt on the north side of the stadium, Strobelallee 54. There are no stadium visits on home match days, and because of UEFA rules sometimes not on the day before either, so plan your stadium visit for a non-match day of your stay.
The BORUSSEUM, BVB’s club museum, is right by the stadium; a combined ticket links it with the stadium walk. Take the U47 and U45 to Westfalenhallen and walk about 1.1 km from there to the FanWelt.
More football awaits at the German Football Museum, directly opposite the main exit of the main station.
